When Antioch was invaded by Muslims in the 7th century, some Christians fled to Syria and Lebanon. The Christian groups which was developed in Antioch are the Maronite Catholic Church, Melkite Catholic Church, and lately the Orthodox Church (after the Great Schism). It further became complicated after their disagreement at the Council of Chalcedon. It resulted then to several factions that had not been reconciled. By the 4th century, internal schisms had struck down the patriarchate of Antioch wherein 4 bishops were claiming to be the true patriarch. The head of the Church of Antioch is called Patriarch.
